Our first encounter with the Double Merle world started innocently enough, on a cold January day as I was scrolling through a Catahoula Leopard Dog group and came upon a sad, depressed lonely soul that needed help. A young DM Catahoula was tied, deaf, and alone in his backyard because he was too much trouble. The neighbors wanted him gone because he barked too much, and his people just wanted him gone.
As Catahoula owners and lovers, we could see his spirit was broken and that he needed help. Never having had a deaf dog before, we were apprehensive. What if? After much thought and discussion we decided it was time to step up and help a friend in need so I contacted the rescue where he was being fostered and took a leap of faith.
From the moment we met Mr. Pink we were taken by his confidence and curiosity.
Unable to do a "meet and greet" with our other Catahoulas I was still worried, What if? Well, not to worry! Within 10 minutes of meeting our others they were all running and playing as if they had grown up together.
This little charmer has brought so much joy to us, he learned the sit sign in 5 minutes. We had no experience with Deafies so we just made it up as we went along. We have about 2 acres fully fenced surrounding our home so our dogs go in and out as they please. At night we use the lights to call them in and he has never had an accident in the house. He knows many commands and now all of our dogs know "signs".
Mr. Pink has become an outgoing, friendly and totally fearless young dog.
As with any breed, do your research. Catahoulas are a strong and active breed that need a strong leader and an active lifestyle. They are not happy on a couch and need to run everyday. Walking ain't running! They are bred to hunt and hold feral hogs, hold cattle, and track a blood trail. They are masters at agility and are trained for Search And Rescue.
While our sweet little Mr. may not be able to run the woods with the hunters, he will have a productive and joyful life guarding our little homestead from those unwanted critters that lurk in the bushes!
There are some considerations to keep in mind when a raising such a special creature, the resources are there. I have met so many wonderful people and learned so much just because we took that leap of faith.
We thank Mr. Pink for that.
